A brilliant indy film from Brit Ken Loach starring relative unknowns including a pre-Oscar winning Adrien Brody.

The film essentially tells the story of the South American cleaners who work in downtown LA who are fighting to win union recognition and therefore better working conditions.

Maya, a new immigrant, gets a job with her sister Rosa cleaning an office, when she bumps into a union activist. Being a firebrand herself, Maya rallies the other cleaners - but at what cost?

An excellent cast and a good use of extras, who actually took part in the marches that happened in LA in the 90s. This fact, along with the feeling that much of the acting is improvised gives the film and edgy, documentary quality.

In the extras part of the DVD, be sure to watch the docu about Rosa, a cleaner who was an extra in the film.

The disc arrived faulty but by wiring it with toothpaste and then cleaning the disc was playable. A really wonderful film and extras. I think we may have seen it in the cinema when it first came out but was really worth seeing again. The extras were also well worth seeing.

Powerful and moving. Ken Loach does it again with a hard-hitting cinema-verite of workers' struggles in Los Angeles. One of the strengths is his use of improvisation from a cast of what appeared to be untrained actors. That gives the film a verisimilitude that punches hard, almost like a documentary.

ken loach switches his radar from the UK on to migrant workers in the US in this very watchable movie. certainly not loach's best work (in my opinion) but all the same a very good left-leaning film that shows the plight of this group of migrant janitors very well. definitely worth watching.

  • Could have been so much better

I thought the story was good and one that needs to be told however I thought it was too bad that Loach couldn't find people who can act. There are times when it seems that every sentence being said ends a bit like a question due to the actors' insecurity. It's ok to try making a film without professioanl actors but why without direction? I thought that Loach could have givem them a little coaching at times to help them make their statements sound real, especially when the two sisters have it out. That scene was actually difficult to watch, the acting was so bad. But overall, I'm still glad I watched it.

On another note, for those of you writing that this film is about South American workers in LA, actually it's not. As a Canadian living in England I always feel the need to point out to Europeans that there are actually 3 countries in North America; USA, Canada and Mexico. This film is about Mexicans entering the U.S. illegally to find work. I don't know why some people feel that this film depicted the exploitation of illegal immigrants when the Mexican workers in the film that were there legally seemed to be treated the same way as the illegal immigrants. Of course the illegal immigrants end up being treated differently if they are caught and deported but the Mexicans who show patience to do it all above board can get better jobs and don't mind the queue jumpers getting sent back. (in real life) Maybe I'm expecting too much from Loach.

A little unbelievable at times, especially as the film is based on the lives of the ordinary.
