Breakfast At Tiffany's

Blake Edwards's adaptation of Truman Capote's classic novella is ideally cast with Audrey Hepburn in the role of Holly Golightly. The free-spirited gamine darts about New York, feted by wealthy men drawn to her megawatt charm and elegance, hoping that the party will never end. After "shopping" in front of Tiffany's window, she meets aspiring writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard), and they begin a platonic friendship. "Sponsored" by an older woman (Patricia Neal) whose interest in the young man is more than literary, he can identify with her experience better than most, taking it upon himself to protect her from the worst aspects of city life. But she seems to need little protection from such friends as incarcerated mob boss Sally Tomato (Alan Reed), who pays her to carry messages to Sing Sing. With her infectious joi de vivre, she helps Paul break through a paralyzing case of writer's block. But when the genial Doc Golightly (Buddy Ebsen) appears in New York in search of Holly, the sources of her gossamer lifestyle suddenly become clearer. Edwards's lighter-than-air romantic comedy, set in a fantasy New York, rides on the irresistible charm of Hepburn at her peak, as well as a memorable score by Henry Mancini. Although George Axelrod's screenplay is as different from the original story as George Peppard is from the young Capote, the film succeeds on its own terms.

Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly has passed, happily, into cinematic folklore. Director Blake Edwards's hymn to New York high style and high living with its charming heroine, along with her cat (called “Cat”) and those wonderful Johnny Mercer Moon River lyrics, has hardly dated since its release. Originally a creation of writer Truman Capote, Holly, as written for the screen by George Axelrod and portrayed by Hepburn, is quite enchanting, even though period censorship makes it rather unclear what she actually does for a living. Despite the presence of handsome George Peppard and Patricia Neal, this is Hepburn's movie, her black dress and long cigarette holder ready again to start a fashion revolution. Only Mickey Rooney's phoney caricature of a Japanese gent seems out of kilter in what is otherwise a thoroughly entertaining and wonderfully escapist movie.

Impossibly cleaned up and asexual version of a light novel which tried to be the American I Am a Camera (qv). Wild parties, amusing scenes and good cameos, but the pace is slow, the atmosphere is unconvincingly clean and luxurious, and the sentimen

    What a Surprise!

It's funny how some films are timeless classics and others aren't (Bringing Down The House with Steve Martin?). This is a timeless classic. It is also a 'must-see' film.

From the outset, you are charmed by Holly Golightly's inherently stylish, mesmerizing, witty and complex character. A superficial call girl one minute and a vulnerable runaway the next. This film not only develops a modern-day role model in Holly Golightly, it also generates more than its fair share of laughs.

Breakfast At Tiffany's is over 40 years old and it is far ahead of its time. It's a great way to spend a few hours. Watch It!

Sick theatregoer almost ruins Breakfast at Tiffany's

    • 06 Nov 2009

Anna Friel almost forgot her lines during a recent performance in West End show Breakfast At Tiffany's - when a sick theatre-goer showered the audience with vomit. The Pushing Daisies star is currently appearing as Holly Golightly in the hit stage production of Audrey Hepburn's classic movie. But one performance was almost ruined after a reveller threw up over the balcony - splattering audience members below. Friel admits she was angry at first - until she realised what had happened. She tells Read more
