Nowhere near as impactful, witty or fresh as the original HP Lovecraft-based cult movie Re-Animator, director Brian Yuzna's gloriously gory sequel (he produced the first outing) sadly ventures more into standard Frankenstein territory. Jeffrey Combs is good value as Herbert West, the mad doctor with the luminous green serum that revives dead tissue to create a living woman out of assorted body parts (the feet of a ballet dancer, the womb of virgin and so on). This has the usual dire consequences. Gruesomely over-the-top, with a nightmarishly surreal climax.

A Big Disappointment After The First Movie

I?ve only seen the uncut region 1 version of the first film in recent years, and that was apparently massively different to the version released in the UK. The UK version had so many scenes removed, that extra stuff had to be added to make it understandable and this changed the story considerably. So when I say that the Bride Of The Re-Animator is a big disappointment after the first movie, I?m talking about the uncut version of the first movie. The sequel is has less gore and a lot less nudity. There?s more overt humour, but it tends to take over from the horror and it?s definitely a case of quantity over quality. The ending when it came, was a let down and left me thinking 'is that it?' A real shame, because the first film is one of my all time favourites and there was so much potential to make a fantastic sequel. I wonder if there?s a uncut version of the sequel that?s any better - all I can find is a Lionsgate/Fox edition that?s longer at 99 minutes, but is 1.33:1 pan & scan (there?s also an out of print Pioneer edition that?s widescreen and has a commentary, but that?s only being sold for silly money on the second hand market).

    Not Quite Lovecraft..

'Bride Of Re-Animator' takes the Re-animator tale back to its mother (its father being of course HP Lovecraft), to Mary Shelley’s apocryphal tale of mans desire to create life.

Herbert West is the doctor with a passion for re-animation but in this, the second Re-animator film, perhaps as a result of his previous problem in the Miskatonic Medical School Herbert is somewhat more selective in choosing what he does with his needle.

The Re-animator films are hilarious for people who like that sort of thing. And though neither the second nor the third films are as insane as the first, all the Re-Animators are a delight for anyone with a black sense of humour.

The original Re-Animator is rightly regarded as an all time-horror classic, and certainly when it comes to tongue-in-cheek gore-filled black comedies only the first 2 Evil Dead films come anywhere near it. Making a sequel looks to be a hopeless task, as the first film clearly tied itself up as a self-contained film, but while it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief from the viewer the script for Bride of Re-Animator does a tremendous job just managing to reunite most of the cast from the first film (half of whom appeared to have died at the end it) without completely throwing away the continuity of the first film.

It?s a bit weird to see Herbert West attempting to give life to separate body parts here when in the first film he couldn?t even manage to re-animate whole corpses without turning them into maniacal zombies, but it does allow scope for this film to explore a slightly different angle from the first whilst still retaining the feel of the original. The first half of the film is rather slow and boring, with only West?s bizarre experiments in joining together odd combinations of body parts providing any entertainment. The ending is fantastic however, with a climax that rivals the ending of the first film for sheer over the top insanity, as West and eternal unwilling sidekick Dan Cain find themselves under siege from the now bat-winged head of Doctor Hill, his re-animated zombies (including a hilarious zombie cop who bursts in holding his badge as though making an arrest), the bricked-up earlier failed experiments of West and of course the ?bride of re-animator? herself?

Inevitably it?s inferior to the original movie, but the combination of returning old favourite characters with some new improved gore effects means this will provide some entertainment for fans of the first film. Nowhere near as bad as it?s reputation, Bride of Re-Animator is a fair stab at a very difficult sequel.

    Good sequel

A good sequel, which is entertaining and very enjoyable, has an interesting plot, is bloody, has some very good special effects and make-up, and also has a good end sequence. The film is a good continuation of the ideas and story from the first film, and an interesting homage to ‘Bride of Frankenstein’. Jeffrey Combs is again good as Herbert West, while the rest of the cast give acceptable performances in their roles. Again the video & audio-quality is poor though.

Predictable worse than a B movie

Knew this was tongue in cheek horror, but really couldnt watch the whole film...Starts off funny, silly horror, gets really dull & predictable in the middle & didnt bother watching the end, more like a D movie...Dont bother wasting your time on this one...

    One and Four are better....

This starts quite promisingly, with the same vein of black humour of the original movie. There is also plenty of gore and gross-out SFX. However, the ending is a chaotic disappointment which doesn't really go anyware new. The newer Beyond Reanimator is much better, but the original is best!
