So well adapted by Richard Curtis that it actually appeals to both sexes, Bridget Jones is actually far better than the book. There's star Renée Zellweger who, as the 1990s heroine, is far more endearing than the book's Bridget. Then one cannot imagine Helen Fielding ever having the luxury of suitor super duo Hugh Grant and Colin Firth — who both surpass expectations as the novel's Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy respectively. Yes, what we have here is the best in British romantic comedy, well directed by newcomer Sharon Maguire, well acted by an ensemble of stellar Brits and very, very funny indeed. Bridget is the Chardonnay drinking, sad thirtysomething with cellulite whose life takes a different turn when she has a flirtation with her boss Daniel, despite the criticisms of friend Mark. Daft, delicious and decidedly dippy, Bridget Jones is quite brilliant.

Enjoyable romantic comedy, based on a best-selling column and book, though some clumsy directorial flourishes hamper the fun.

    Bridget Jones: The Musical

    • 05 Jun 2009

Hit movie Bridget Jones's Diary is to be made into a musical. The 2001 film, starring Renee Zellweger, grossed £188 million worldwide, while the 2004 sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, raked in £175 million. And the writer of the original novels, Helen Fielding, is hoping to cash in further on the franchise with an all-singing all-dancing stage production. She tells The Times, "I've been doing it (writing) for two years, and writing the songs." Read more
