Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. So well adapted by Richard Curtis that it actually appeals to both sexes, Bridget Jones is actually far better than the book. There's star Renée Zellweger who, as the 1990s heroine, is far more endearing than the book's Bridget. Then one cannot imagine Helen Fielding ever having the luxury of suitor super duo Hugh Grant and Colin Firth — who both surpass expectations as the novel's Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy respectively. Yes, what we have here is the best in British romantic comedy, well directed by newcomer Sharon Maguire, well acted by an ensemble of stellar Brits and very, very funny indeed. Bridget is the Chardonnay drinking, sad thirtysomething with cellulite whose life takes a different turn when she has a flirtation with her boss Daniel, despite the criticisms of friend Mark. Daft, delicious and decidedly dippy, Bridget Jones is quite brilliant.

Enjoyable romantic comedy, based on a best-selling column and book, though some clumsy directorial flourishes hamper the fun.

Very entertaining comedy, although a little predictable! in parts. Renee Zelwigger plays a very good part with a suprisingly good british accent!.

Bridget Jones's Diary author Helen Fielding is single again after separating from her longtime partner, according to a new report. The writer has parted ways with The Simpsons scriptwriter Kevin Curran, her partner of 10 years and the father of her two children, reports the Daily Express newspaper.
