So well adapted by Richard Curtis that it actually appeals to both sexes, Bridget Jones is actually far better than the book. There's star Renée Zellweger who, as the 1990s heroine, is far more endearing than the book's Bridget. Then one cannot imagine Helen Fielding ever having the luxury of suitor super duo Hugh Grant and Colin Firth — who both surpass expectations as the novel's Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy respectively. Yes, what we have here is the best in British romantic comedy, well directed by newcomer Sharon Maguire, well acted by an ensemble of stellar Brits and very, very funny indeed. Bridget is the Chardonnay drinking, sad thirtysomething with cellulite whose life takes a different turn when she has a flirtation with her boss Daniel, despite the criticisms of friend Mark. Daft, delicious and decidedly dippy, Bridget Jones is quite brilliant.

Enjoyable romantic comedy, based on a best-selling column and book, though some clumsy directorial flourishes hamper the fun.

    Bridget Jones's Review

A super comedy flick with an excellent British cast complementing Renee Zellweger in the title role. She really pulls off a great British accent and the film is both funny and touching in equal measures. The only thing is Bridget Jones is clearly sexy, smart and funny in this film (not sure about the book) so personally I found it difficult to see her as a lonely singleton, but that is really a minor in this cracking comedy.

More insulting bilge from Working Title

The coming of age tale of why a woman cant be single and stand on her own to feet, be proud of who she is, revel in her interests and wait for the right guy ...

... oh yes because she's dull and uninteresting, isnt into much of anything other than getting drunk ...

and seemingly *has* to choose between jumper wearing gimp or sir cheatalot the b*stard, rather than hanging in there for someone genuinely neat.

    Utter, utter pap.

This was a reasonable film. Most enjoyable and worth a night in to watch, but not a classic. Compare the to love actually, and love actually wins every time.

HAND ME OVER TO THE TALIBAN!

I would sooner declare myself a heroin addicted, homosexual thief, and hand my self over to the Taliban than watch this film again.

Ps. the reason she's holding her nose on the cover is the other two actors stink!

(One star, only cos I had to)

    chick flick heaven

Renee Zellweger is excellent in a role that she was born to play.Hugh Grant doesn't travel far from his usual role and Colin Firth makes his mark as the gorgeous Mark Darcy.A chick flick that your man will enjoy even if he wont admit it.

When her mother Pamela (Gemma Jones) steers Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) toward yet another disastrous hookup - this time with barrister and mamas boy Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), to whom Bridget takes an immediate dislike (and vice-versa) - Bridget decides to take action to change her life. She starts by keeping a diary in which she honestly notes all of her bad habits and life-affectations, including noting her weight, her smoking jones, her tendency to drink, and most of all, her potentially hazardous fantasy life. The object of her fantasy? Daniel Cleaver, Bridget's boss at the publishing firm in which they both work.

Bridget's circle of friends includes her girlfriends Jude (Shirley Henderson) and Shazzer (Sally Phillips), and gay friend Tom (James Callis), all of whom Bridget can count on for sisterly support, especially when she gets caught up in a triangle involving Daniel, Mark, and Marks pseudo-girlfriend Natasha (Embeth Davidtz). Meanwhile, Bridget's mum Pam has a little surprise of her own for her husband Colin (Jim Broadbent). And, as often happens at times like this . . . wackiness ensues.

What audiences found so endearing about this movie escapes me. The protagonist (Ren?e Zellweger) does little to initiate much of the action in her life, of which finding love seems to be the most important element. Little did I know that the secret for a woman to find Mr. Right was for her to sit around and embarrass herself while Mr. Right, without any kind of encouragement, thinks about her, deciding first that he hates her and then changing his mind to say that he loves her. The movie has some genuinely funny moments and Hugh Grant is watchable as a cad, but, outside of that, this woe-is-me-fest presents little to enjoy.

In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Ren?e Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething "singleton" (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynisti c men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.
