Bright Star

London 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23 year old English poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair started at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general. It was the illness of Keats's younger brother that drew them together. Keats was touched by Fanny's efforts to help and agreed to teach her poetry. By the time Fanny's alarmed mother and Keats's best friend Brown realized their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept into powerful new sensations, "I have the feeling as if I were dissolving", Keats wrote to her. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted. Only Keats's illness proved insurmountable.

    Poetic justice

Bright Star's romantic narrative has a hypnotic quality which benefits from Campion's attention to detail in its natural settings and historical context. Wholly credible, Keats' and Brawne's relationship blossoms at a steady pace which allows the viewer to savour the dialogue and cinematography in the same vein as a reader would discern the finer points of great poetry.

This is a rare insight into the musings of two poets and the position they assumed in early nineteenth century society. It ably demonstrates why Keats' poetry has stood the test of time and pays tribute to Fanny's role in fulfilling his potential.

Bring LOTS of tissues when you see this movie!

This film was a real weepy, and such a treat, exactly what I have come to expect from Campion. She has the ability to translate her fascination for the subject of any movie she undertakes into a visual feast and a true work of art.

I loved Fanny's dresses although a little distracting when she gets put in a dress made from denim!!! Perfectly cast, by the way.Whishaw and Cornish were so entirely perfectly cast as Keats and his love interest,Fanny.Campion takes her time in building the scenes of the relationship that slowly builds between the two, and throughout that journey the viewer is delighted with poetry and beautiful imagery. The relationship between the two is beautiful in it's fascination and connection that seems seemless and almost pure and innocent. Their relationship can best be described by what Keats said:' I almost wish we were butterflies and liv'd but three summer days - three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain '.Beautiful and so sad, because lack of money and illness and finally death take Keats from his Fanny, at the tender age of 25. Campion just keeps getting better with each film she makes. She kept me spellbound with The Piano, the very first film I saw of hers and several films down the line she still keeps surprising me!
