Cleaning Up NYC
By Ned0 from W.Yorks , 19 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I heard a lot of negative publicity about this film which reunited the director and writer of "Taxi Driver".
I settled down preparing myself for something average and instead I got a complete treat.
Nicholas Cage plays a New York ambulance driver who is slowly cracking up under the strain of his job. The film shows the city through his eyes.
So far, it sounds like just a re-run of "Taxi Driver", only "Bringing Out The Dead" is fill to the brim with the kind of jet-black humour that made "Fight Club" such a riot. Add to that some fantastic cinematography and a riotous soundtrack (high speed, drug-fueled ambulance driving scored by The Clash) and you've got what I think is a complete blast of a film.
Sure, it may be a little too dark for some tastes, but if you enjoy your humour darker than midnight and find New York fascinating, then you'd be a fool to miss this.- Was this review helpful to you?

(31)Not 1 of Cages best!
By sammyrush (11 reviews) , 10 Sep 2011Very slow moving slow paced film. The fact cage is in it is not enough to save the movie, which at times went straight over my head and I felt like 'what the heck is this about'. Definitely not one that I like.- Was this review helpful to you?

Leave them for dead more like!
By Heraldsteve (6 reviews) , 24 Aug 2011This is one of the worst films I have ever watched, typical nonsense you normally expect of a B rate film, but not from this director and cast. Do yourself a favour and don't bother even giving it a try.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hated this the first time..love it now!
By stiffstix (8 reviews) from London , 14 Jul 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I absolutely hated this film when I first watched it. Way too much stop n go cutting...however, for some strange reason i watched it again and i loved it. Great style, like the music edit, really flows into the visuals. Can be a little slow at times but overall i'd say give it a go.- Was this review helpful to you?

bringing out the dead
By lukasz84 (75 reviews) , 22 Jun 2011mr scorcesse adapts connelly's material with dexterity, and his trademark cinematic flair. the film descends into the hellish depths of early nineties' NY ridden with crime and madness. but is not all horror, and there are layers of sharp and intelligent humor interwoven with philosophical observations, and a vivacious soundtrack. the work is superbly executed, detailed, focused and inspired. This is the New York's anti-ode, but, with an expert handling of paradox, it manages to, at the same time, celebrate this ferocious, out of bounds legend of a city.- Was this review helpful to you?

FILM IN INTENSIVE CARE
By Beechboy (3 reviews) from Wigton , 28 May 2011ANOTHER DOSE OF NEW YORK MAGIC REALISM FROM SCORSESE ; THE FILM REMINDED ME VERY MUCH OF TAXI DRIVER , ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS THE SUPERB DE NERO EPIC .
CAGE IS CONVINCING ENOUGH AS THE STRESSED OUT PARAMEDIC , BUT ARQUETTE SEEMS TO HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO ACT , & JOHN GOODMAN JUST DISAPPEARS HALFWAY THROUGH FOR NO APPARENT REASON . ON THE PLUS SIDE , THE MEAN STREETS OF THE BRONX ARE LOVINGLY SHOT , AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS SPOT ON . HOWEVER , THIS FILM IS NOT ONE OF SCORSESE'S FINEST , AND I WOULD NOT WATCH IT AGAIN .- Was this review helpful to you?
