Britannic

Though its infamous sister ship has received most of the attention over the last 90 years, the Britannic met its end in a manner eerily similar to the Titanic. A true story that has remained largely untold, the Britannic was the largest passenger liner in the world when it sunk, and the circumstances surrounding its demise are just as mysterious as those of the Titanic, as it sustained damage almost identical to that of its sister ship. Though it has never been discovered exactly what caused the Britannic to sink, the film is based on historical evidence and imagines that the liner's demise was the doing of German spies on board the boat. Along with this, the film follows the problems that a budding romance between a young Briton and German brings on the couple, as their countries are in the midst of fighting WWI on opposing sides. A touching and fascinating historical drama, BRITANNIC provides the first look of its kind at the little known story of this ill-fated ship.

The appeal of this TV movie is in its cheeky attempt to rip off James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster — but on a fraction of the budget. True, the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, was also sunk (in November 1916), but whether the hospital ship was torpedoed because of espionage activities is one of the weaker points of the movie. The special effects aren't bad, but the inevitable romance that pads out the final voyage is even more anaemic than Jack and Rose's. Director Brian Trenchard-Smith doesn't bring any depth to the melodrama, but it's still an entertaining voyage.

    Good story

Good story well-told with a good performance from the leads. Would have preferred not having the rather awkward romance - personally think it would have been better had the English agent seen how ruthlessly vicious the German spy actually was. In support, Jacqueline Bissett had some great lines and the Captain telling the goverrness to ' whilst aboard be aware of her condition and act accordingly'------ that of being a woman made us smile !!!! Realistic for those times !! Only got three because the romance was annoying.
