He's a horrible, dishonest, immoral louse, and I mean that with all due respect...
By a customer from UK , 08 Sep 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This was the second Woody Allen movie I saw, and made me a fan. Woody Plays the eponymous Danny Rose, theatrical agent to some of New Yorks more unual (and low end) acts; think one armed juggler, one legged tap dancer, a penguin skating on stage, dressed as a rabbi... you get the picture. Into this eclectic mix bursts Lou Canova, a has been crooner who is riding a nostalgia wave and has another chance at making it big. He asks Danny to act as a cover and bring his girlfriend, Tina Vitali, to a big performance so that Lou's wife won't get suspicious, and against his better judgement, Danny agrees. When Danny arrives to collect her all hell breaks loose as the volatile Tina argues with Lou and storms off, leaving Danny following in her wake, all the while pleading for her to come with him to the performance.
Aside from Rosemary's Baby, this is the only movie I have seen where Mia Farrow was convincing - it took me a while to realise that it was her under the huge glasses and the wig - but she is fantastic as Tina. Particularly good scenes are the visit to a local medium and watching the other stand-ups discussing Danny's early career as an entertainer. If you have never enjoyed Mr Allen, this might be the movie that changes your mind...- Was this review helpful to you?

(24)a timeless comedy
By TracieG (9 reviews) from Byfleet, Surrey , 21 Aug 2012Woody Allen at his best. The story is told by Danny Rose's friends - cutting back to scenes they discuss. It is well done and you can't help but laugh at the poor unfortunate Mr Rose as he gets deeper and deeper into trouble when all he tries to do is help people. A great comedy classic- Was this review helpful to you?

First rate.
By a customer , 23 Jul 2012Simply brilliant! Allen at his very best. Everything about this film is excellent; its direction, the script, the structure, its mixture of humour and poignancy, the acting. In the end it is atribute to Allen's genius that he can get you to really care about the central character with all his foibles and failings. No one makes films like this.- Was this review helpful to you?

Wonderful Woody on Top Form
By Cato (703 reviews) from Lydbury North , 10 Oct 2011One of Woody Allen's best films, directed with fast pace, a great script, and tremendous humour. It's a winner from start to finish and should be in anyone's list of top 20th century films.- Was this review helpful to you?

Broadway Danny Rose
By a customer from North of Watford , 30 Jun 2010Woody Allen wrote, directed and starred in this comedy drama about an unsuccessful New York theatrical agent who gets mixed up with hostile gangsters. The film is amusing rather than fall-down-laughing-funny. It looks absolutely right in widescreen black-and-white. Nick Apollo Forte plays a Sinatra/Perry Como-style singer cashing in on a wave of nostalgia; Mia Farrow plays the singers girlfriend and then for reasons difficult to understand strictly in terms of the plot, switches her allegiance to Woody Allen. Veteran comedian Milton Berle and some lesser-known comics play themselves. The whole thing is quite engaging but the basic storyline is lightweight.- Was this review helpful to you?

Broadway Danny Rose
By a customer from Ballymena , 13 Aug 2009Another charming and seemingly effortless tale from Allen, although the balance of comedy and drama isn't quite as delicate as usual. Snappy writing and good performances, with Mia Farrow the real standout with a brash, sexy performance a million miles from her usual wimpy, whiny roles.- Was this review helpful to you?
