Filming by NumbersBy AlexPhillips (43 reviews) from UK , 25 Feb 2013

[Highly rated reviewer]Broken City is a curious beast. Put simply it's 'just ok'.
The story is pleasant enough and all of the actors appeared to have shown up on time to read through the script; but it's a wholly unremarkable film in a way which makes the viewer wish it was simply a throwaway thriller novel.
The plot follows Mark Wahlberg as a former cop turned PI who is hired by the Mayor of New York (Crowe) to spy on his wife (Jones). What follows is two hours of some of the most by the numbers directing I have ever seen and an end product which is easily forgettable.
It appears that Allen Hughes (co-director of the nonsensical Book of Eli) directed Broken City by doing nothing more than point the camera at the actors and print the first take. Clearly this is a project which worked well on paper but the end product really isn't worth the effort.

DISAPPOINTING !By Burnhamite (407 reviews) from BURNHAM , 03 Dec 2013This movie must rate as one of the slowest and most predictable of all time, Why the 'F' word must be in every sentence anf the picture itself in all total darkness certainly does not help and the overpowering background music is ridiculous.
Wahlberg and Crowe phone it inBy a customer , 03 Dec 2013It's okayish. None of the characters really engaged my interest and internecine warfare between millionaire city politicians doesn't get me going either...nothing can surprise us about such individuals. And there was a plot-hole at the end which I won't fill in but seemed pretty obvious. Glad I didn't rent but watched on instant.
Broken something... broken promises?By Rockinroy (49 reviews) from Milton Keynes , 03 Dec 2013Argh just wasted a rent on this one. The disc goes back and I could have watched it on Instant. Annoying because this is a distinctly average movie. I had it out at the same time as Lawless and in terms of rating across the board the latter beats BC hands down. I expected more from the cast and the plot is hardly that complex. In fact they made more of it than there probably was. I did not care for any of the characters that much even though they were well enough played by those concerned. It looks fine, there are some amusing sequences but all in all it more of a TV drama than a movie and am glad I did not waste more of my time on it than I did, i. e. go to the cinema.
Very entertainingBy mentalbabs (1 review) , 02 Dec 2013A very enjoyable film with high ranking stars and a plot that will keep you captivated as you try to entangle it
Find another filmBy a customer , 02 Dec 2013Crowe must have been skint. I found I could have watched the first 20 minutes then skipped to the last 10 and not missed anything entertaining in this flaccid film.
