Filming by NumbersBy AlexPhillips (43 reviews) from UK , 25 Feb 2013

[Highly rated reviewer]Broken City is a curious beast. Put simply it's 'just ok'.
The story is pleasant enough and all of the actors appeared to have shown up on time to read through the script; but it's a wholly unremarkable film in a way which makes the viewer wish it was simply a throwaway thriller novel.
The plot follows Mark Wahlberg as a former cop turned PI who is hired by the Mayor of New York (Crowe) to spy on his wife (Jones). What follows is two hours of some of the most by the numbers directing I have ever seen and an end product which is easily forgettable.
It appears that Allen Hughes (co-director of the nonsensical Book of Eli) directed Broken City by doing nothing more than point the camera at the actors and print the first take. Clearly this is a project which worked well on paper but the end product really isn't worth the effort.

disappointing, hoped for betterBy haylesbaylespigstales (177 reviews) from Fleetwood , 08 Aug 2013just ok, the trailer looked so much better than the film actually is, which is really disappointing to say the least.
the cast has some a listers but even they cant lift it
Average movieBy sweepie (26 reviews) , 07 Aug 2013Average movie with a basic storyline that has been done better lots of times before. Made when Russell Crowe needed the money and he just seemed to stumble through this movie, found him mumbling his lines. Also sure I caught CZJ looking at the camera at one stage, disappointing
Good watchBy a customer , 04 Aug 2013Good watch did not think I would but I liked it. Good plot and kept me thinking the whole way through
great expectations...but !By sharyn (3 reviews) , 04 Aug 2013considering the cast and story line, this was basic and average, well filmed, good solid acting but something missing, so similar to so many old films but it still could have had a spark, mildly disappointing, not a bad film just not great
Broken and CorruptedBy Minopater (261 reviews) from Wallington , 03 Aug 2013This is an attempt at recreating the films noirs of the 1940's.Unfortunately the plot is about as original as some of those films. The predictability manages to snuff out any dramatic tension and it's a pity that so many fine actors aren't given material worthy of their talents. Crowe and Zeta Jones just mouth their through their scenes without breaking into a sweat. There is a twist at the end but you can see it coming long before then. A pity. But if you're not inclined towards a cerebral evening it will just about hold your attention
