    [Highly rated reviewer]

this dvd is superb. Print Ritter played by Robert Duvall, and his nephew Tom Harte played by Thomas Haden Church, agree to deliver a herd of 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming.

Along the way, they rescue a group of young chinese women, most of them are still just girls, who are being transported to a brothel to be auctioned off.

When the madam sees she is about to lose the girls, she screams at Tom, 'What about my property?' He shouts back, 'That's the price of being a capitalist, lady.'

Unable to overcome the language barrier, Print assigns numbers to the girls.

Number 3, Sun Foy is the most fearless and perceptive of them. Though the others do not want to be called Number 4--an unlucky number in their homeland--Ye Fung (Olivia Cheng), the most tragic of the group, doesn't care. Targeted for her beauty, she finds herself unable to overcome the trauma. The number suits her, in her mind.

Also along the way, Print and Tom rescue Nola Johns (Greta Scacchi), the proverbial hooker with the heart of gold, who was forced into prostitution after her husband died.

the movie is filmed over the lush landscape of the Canadian Rockies, which stands in admirably for the wild West of the late 1800's.

Robert Duvall's character of Print, is instantly likeable in this film as a father figure, and you never doubt that his intentions for the girls are honourable.

The trek is long and hard, and the unlikely band of travellers face much hardship.

And what makes this western unique, is that we see the story from the view of the female characters.

'Broken Trail' combines grandeur and intimacy. It has moments of great humour to lighten the drama, explosive action, and a bittersweet sense of nostalgia.

the tension builds, at the very end of the film, so it keeps you guessing right up until the very last minute. I will not spoil the ending here, yet suffice to say that the ending is tension-filled, action-packed, and beautifully directed for maximum suspense and impact.

    well worth renting out

Had more fun watching paint dry! Struggling to offer twenty words to review this movie. Failed to see the point of such a movie. So bad there was no way I was going to spend anymore of my life watching part two.

It was in two parts both on one disc, 3 hours viewing in all.

Cowboys on the trail herding 500 horses to market and picking up and helping a few human strays on the way. Which didn't go down kindly with others. Lots of action, great scenery and acting, storyline good. A peasant way to spend a wet afternoon with the family.

A slow, in places, but solid western based on real life events. Good performances from Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church, well worth watching.

A good solid western in two parts. Good and watchable from start to finish. A cattle drive with a difference.
