[Highly rated reviewer]this dvd is superb. Print Ritter played by Robert Duvall, and his nephew Tom Harte played by Thomas Haden Church, agree to deliver a herd of 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming.
Along the way, they rescue a group of young chinese women, most of them are still just girls, who are being transported to a brothel to be auctioned off.
When the madam sees she is about to lose the girls, she screams at Tom, 'What about my property?' He shouts back, 'That's the price of being a capitalist, lady.'
Unable to overcome the language barrier, Print assigns numbers to the girls.
Number 3, Sun Foy is the most fearless and perceptive of them. Though the others do not want to be called Number 4--an unlucky number in their homeland--Ye Fung (Olivia Cheng), the most tragic of the group, doesn't care. Targeted for her beauty, she finds herself unable to overcome the trauma. The number suits her, in her mind.
Also along the way, Print and Tom rescue Nola Johns (Greta Scacchi), the proverbial hooker with the heart of gold, who was forced into prostitution after her husband died.
the movie is filmed over the lush landscape of the Canadian Rockies, which stands in admirably for the wild West of the late 1800's.
Robert Duvall's character of Print, is instantly likeable in this film as a father figure, and you never doubt that his intentions for the girls are honourable.
The trek is long and hard, and the unlikely band of travellers face much hardship.
And what makes this western unique, is that we see the story from the view of the female characters.
'Broken Trail' combines grandeur and intimacy. It has moments of great humour to lighten the drama, explosive action, and a bittersweet sense of nostalgia.
the tension builds, at the very end of the film, so it keeps you guessing right up until the very last minute. I will not spoil the ending here, yet suffice to say that the ending is tension-filled, action-packed, and beautifully directed for maximum suspense and impact.
well worth renting out

Very good modern westernBy Peden (2 reviews) from Gourock , 03 Jun 2009The movie is very similar to Lonesome Dove in the style and pacing of the story. The main characters are well developed and the story always moves forwards. There are no large scale gunfights but there are moments of action throughout the movie.
ExcellentBy crispin40 (563 reviews) from Stirling, Scotland , 14 May 2009We borrowed this as my partner has a thing for Robert Duvall. However, we found ourselves watching one of the best 'Western' films we've ever seen. Other people have done better reviews so I'll just add that the music was excellent as well as the story line, the acting; the scenery and direction.
Its a little over long but anyone who doesn't want to spend the best part of 3 hours in one sitting could split it as there is a definite split in the middle. Seems as tho it was made for various episodes on TV but we have all of it in 1 disc. Must look for some more films with Thomas Haden Church in them as he was new to me
Broken TrailBy PoetDad (109 reviews) from Pulborough , 10 May 2009Superb! Wonderful! A most enjoyable film with some great actors.
Broken TrailBy a customer from Royston , 05 May 2009This was a very 'bitty' film, couldn't work out whether it was originally filmed as a tv mini series because of the odd breaks in scenes.
Robert Duval is usually very good (remember 'Lonesome Dove')? but this film was not him at his best. The plot was very loosely put together, but kept me watching in the hope that it would reach its full potential.
At times sad, and at others, downright boring, this was definately a film to watch when you have absolutely nothing better to do.
Broken TrailBy a customer from Monmouth , 10 Apr 2009Loved the film with great acting from Robert Duvall.
