It's a combination of genres and styles that just shouldn't work, but it does. Martial arts, period drama, intrigue, werewolves, horror, freakshow, romance, murder mystery, magic, shamanism, even. All this and Mark Dacascos too! I don't know what more a person could ask...

All my bias aside, this is a lovely film and deserves a much wider audience. It's worth watching just for M. Gans' use of colour and space, especially in some of the shots of the forest, which are simply stunning.

The only negative points I would raise are:

The English dub of this film is not particularly good. Please watch it in its original French. There needs to be a definitive director's cut available. The French had an *8 disc* release of the film on DVD, with all the various cuts, and deleted scenes, etc. The longer version of the film is a lot better, but not easily available here. And some of the deleted scenes are really worth watching, too. If you speak French, grab a French version. I'm waiting for them to put English subtitles on all of them, still...

Lovely film, lovely costumes, lovely locations, atmospheric, exciting and beautiful to look at.
