    [Highly rated reviewer]

Sorry folks, I have to disagree entirely with previous reviewer. Look, there are only five stories in the world in any case, so everything you see on screen is essentially a rehash of all of them. It's just not fair to say seen it before .... This film deals with consequences of conflict. It's not a who's right or who's wrong moral dimension; Afghanistan just happens to be the relevant conflict backdrop. It even manages to avoid being schmalzily gung-ho. What makes the film special is that a lot of what you get out of it happens in your own head. There's no pithy dialogue to explain poorly thought out plot points. There's no huge special effects budget. Just a tight screenplay, tight directing and five great performances. Jake we know can pull them out of the bag. But the Spiderman bloke? Well this is a real challenge well handled. Then Natalie Portman and the two child actresses playing the daughters are great supporting cast. Put this straight onto your reserve listing.

  • Contrasting spiders

I did not think spider man would ever be able to pull off a role as a real character. The contrast between the brothers in character, physic and physical presentation emphasised the distance between them. Nathalie did not do much to breach the gap and the film would have been darker and stronger without her.

This is really a film about the sacrifices we make to see freedom again. Tobey McGuire is sent to Afghanistan for another tour of duty, leaving his wife Natalie Portman and his two daughters behind. His helicopter crashes and he’s listed as missing in action, presumed dead. Devastated, his parents and his brother (Jake G., recently released from prison) try to console his wife. But he is still alive and the Taliban force him to kill his fellow American marine to stay alive. When U. S. forces invade the Taliban camp, they find him and eventually the body of the marine and McGuire doesn’t tell them he has killed him. Upon his return to the States, the guilt he feels eats away at him until he finally implodes. Impressive performances from Portman, McGuire and Jake G.

  • Remarkable Film With a Remarkable Story, Played By Remarkable Actors!!

I was so very touched by this film, so much more than i thought i would be. I could not help but think of our guys and ladies out at war and there families. So heartbreaking. The characters were played with such professionalism. Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire as brothers Tommy and Sam, My oh my I could actually see a resemblance between them. grace as Sam's wife and the two wonderful little actors playing their daughters were all remarkable. Also seeing the side of the parents of the son who goes off to war!! A Well directed film depicting the effects of war on all members of a family!

Nice film, not as moving as it could have been but follows a good story well and never gets slow or dull.

    - PRAISE- Apart from the obvious reason that a female might rent this film (the ridiculously handsome Jake Gyllenhaal), all drooling aside this film was much better than I'd expected. Emotionally charged version of the age old love triangle, without coming across as a half- baked romance. The amazing performances elevate this film from just an average 3 star rating. Especially the eldest girl, at such a young age to convey such emotion is the mark of a true actor. she was mesmerising to watch. - CRITICISM- The story didn't come to any natural conclusion - not that every film should be neatly tied up with a bow at the end, by any means, but I felt as if the story that could be played out after and the struggles the characters face would be most interesting. of course if this was a television series with hours of play to spare, then happy days.
