Head and shoulders their best 'meet...' film

The first and only really 'fresh' entry in their comedy-horror series. Some good routines, lovely sets and effects, and a good supporting cast including Chaney and Lugosi. This is clearly them at their best with attention to detail and plots that sadly wasn't evident in their rather repetitive and formularised follow-ups. Watch this one, give the others in the 'A&C Meet...' series a miss.

    Raucous

There's some historical interest in trying to see why this pair of comics was so popular in the late 1940s and through the 1950s, but, to me, they now seem dated and one-note. Lacking the warmth of Laurel and Hardy, the sophistication of Crosby and Hope or the inventiveness of the Marx Brothers, their contribution to film comedy is the preservation - and repetition ad nauseam - of old vaudeville routines delivered in a manner more suited to reaching the back rows of burlesque houses than the intimacies of the camera. Putting these two films together on one disc does them no favours, because it highlights just how repetitive they were - the routine is exactly the same, only the settings and supports change. They are strident, loud and bullying, and, although some of the routines are certainly amusing, they generally go on too long. Not for me, I'm afraid.
