Whilst growing up in the 1970's, I recall the many furtive attempts to stay up and indulge my fascination with adult viewing. However, it was not until the mid 1980's, with the channel 4 repeats, that I became aquainted with the Budgie series.
I can only remember seeing Budgie in colour, so on viewing the first disc of series 1, i was treated to a first viewing of each of the 4 episodes.
What struck me immediately was, with the exception of being quaintly dated, the quality of both the script and the acting. The late Adam Faith seemed born to play the protaganist and I delighted at the host of character actors fondly remembered from a bygone era.
Slightly stylised, reminiscent of many programmes and films from that period, both the fashions and the 'argot' contribute to dating Budgie. Younger viewers would be baffled at the use of 'bread' for money, or the wardrobe and hairstyles of the cast. The themes such as sex, petty crime, estranged spouses and the working class 'Jack the Lad'would fail to titilate today. Even watching during the 80's, the show was an obvious forunner to contempories such as Minder and Only Fools and Horses. However, where time and repeated viewing has been unkind to many films and series from decades gone by, Budgie appears to be one of those exceptions to the proverbial rose tinted specticals. I anticipate watching the remaining discs from series 1, before renting series 2 whilst lamenting why it is that they cannot seem to make things like this anymore!
VERY LIVELY START BUT SERIES WAINS IN LATTER EPISODES
