Truly uplifting

Having had the album for a couple of years I was interested to see how the whole thing came about - I wasn't disappointed!
I had always assumed that the Buena Vista Social Club as a band had been around for decades and was pleasantly surprised to learn that many of the musicians were long-forgotten and in retirement and were brought together by Ry Cooder and Nick Gold just for the purpose of making an album of Cuban music in an 'old-style'!
It was inspiring to see people in their 80s and 90s making music with all the energy of a 20 year old and obviously enjoying it!
This film is about the music and nothing else.

Although- I have watched this with people of good taste who aren't especially into the music- I thought they would still enjoy the story, but they didn't- still, I like it and it's my house! I am completely convinced that Ibrahim Ferrer is the angel that guards the gates of heaven - I've mentioned this to a few people and it hasn't gained consensus. Groovey recording of a moment in time

These star performers, some in their ninetys, have a desire to make music, brimming inside them so that the vitality of the playing is always completely obvious. So refreshing, contrasted with the listless rock 'n' roll or pop we are now used to. Wenders is a canny and unassuming craftsman and his inconspicuousness or modesty belies his ravenous apetite for the beautiful Cuban locations and his obvious love for the emerging characters, which is so very charming. In many ways the convergence of Ry Cooder with Juan de Marcos and the film's director was a chance grasped and realised almost miraculously. Begining to appreciate its venerable players only brings this home, more so. Much of the music was originated or written in the fifties but it takes an effort to contextualise it because it doesn't sound dated. So many strange juxtapositions are found in the rediscovering of a spirit in a land where many outside influences were denied for so long. But essentialy this has old timers singing about sex, desire and beauty with a passion that makes those years meaningless. Feel the spirit of Salsa, merging into your blood as you listen and watch. It's all about the music

It captures a period of time in Cuban music-making beautifully, just on the turn when Cuba has opened up for Wender to make it and while some truly extraordinary musicians were still alive.

It's art not a movie

After watching this you gonna feel a bit cuban inside, it's a truly masterpiece. And now i can't wait to going to Cuba, still 12 months to go, but my hearth is already there.

Havana home to me, thank you Ry Cooder!
By a customer , 11 Oct 2011I first bought Ry Cooder’s Buena Vista social club album when I was 23 years of age, I am now 38. I was quite moved when I heard this album and always hoped that one day I too would get to go to Havana to see and feel the inspiration on the street. This film, again put together by Ry Cooder is a tribute once more to his conviction for true inspirational music, and so many talents, brought together in the Buena Vista group. I have just watched this film this evening, finding this film by chance on love film, and again I am quite transported emotionally. I also saw Omara in Australia at a gig at the Opera house in 2001, the emotions and intensity of the music has all been brought back to me – truly quite magical.
