Season 4 doesn't hang very well together overall as a season. But it definately contains some of the best Buffy episodes ever. There is of course 'Hush', where everyone is made silent. Faith wakes up and with revenge on the brain steals Buffy's body in the 2 part 'This Years Girl' and 'Who Are You?'. 'Pangs' is the Buffy twist on the Friend's 'thankgiving is a disaster' episode is very funny. The last three epsiodes are a brilliant finale with the original 4 characters coming together and some scenes that are a great homage to the Matrix. My favourite episode is the last one of the season, 'Restless' its surreal and insightful. Its the season where Giles revealled his singing talent which is great and also becomes a demon briefly - v.funny. Willow revealled her witch and gay identity which is interesting but sad as I miss the shy old Willow, though her powers do inadvertantly lead Buffy and Spike to get engaged - v.funny again. It also sees Spike return which can only be good and Anya too. But we say goodbye to Oz and Angel is no longer in Sunnydale - boohoo! All that without mentioning the main baddies of the whole season! Roll on series 5 and lets hope Riley gets cut out quickly.
There is a part of everyone which likes Buffy. I promise. As a series it is consistently well-written - self-conscious and deprecatory.
Added to this, its format of semi open narrative means that ayone can get involved at practicaly any of the episodes in each of the seven seasons. Season Four is the first one in college, where all of the Scooby Gang have ended up at Sunnydale University (apart from Xander), despite Willow being head-hunted by the FBI. However, one of the great things about Joss Whedon is that this is all accounted for, and frequently joked about.
The big bad in this series does not make an appearance until disc 4, although he is mentioned long before then. Buffy is struggling with growing up - she is no longer big slayer in a small pond, but rather, small girl on big campus. Personally, she is the most irritating character for a large proportion - whingy and almost completely solipsistic. Thankfully, she can be tolerated as Anya, ex-demon turned Xander's partner, rapidly starts to steal the show. Spike also gets his biggest role yet as he finds his death changed dramatically by some unwelcome interference.
The gang have to grow up fast to deal with the tribulations life has in store - questions of sexuality and chastity, along with the metaphorical evil lurking just outside. If you haven't seen any Buffy yet, I recommend starting from the very beginning, and working up to this season.
Stand out episodes include 'Hush', 'Superstar' and 'New Moon Rising'.
Enjoy the Sunnydale universe!
