Season 4 doesn't hang very well together overall as a season. But it definately contains some of the best Buffy episodes ever. There is of course 'Hush', where everyone is made silent. Faith wakes up and with revenge on the brain steals Buffy's body in the 2 part 'This Years Girl' and 'Who Are You?'. 'Pangs' is the Buffy twist on the Friend's 'thankgiving is a disaster' episode is very funny. The last three epsiodes are a brilliant finale with the original 4 characters coming together and some scenes that are a great homage to the Matrix. My favourite episode is the last one of the season, 'Restless' its surreal and insightful. Its the season where Giles revealled his singing talent which is great and also becomes a demon briefly - v.funny. Willow revealled her witch and gay identity which is interesting but sad as I miss the shy old Willow, though her powers do inadvertantly lead Buffy and Spike to get engaged - v.funny again. It also sees Spike return which can only be good and Anya too. But we say goodbye to Oz and Angel is no longer in Sunnydale - boohoo! All that without mentioning the main baddies of the whole season! Roll on series 5 and lets hope Riley gets cut out quickly.
this is one of the worst seasons of buffy that also contains some of the best episodes in the entire collection, for example 'HUSH' is just genius and in places comical and dramatic. but the love story between buffy and riley is slightly uncomfortable as it gets deeper. it is impossible not to compare riley to angel, and it's a pretty safe bet that angel comes out on top. the season also focuses on the 'INITIATIVE' too much and seems to detract from the normal theme that we have come to know and love about buffy. finally the final episode still has me confused slightly, no matter how many times i watch it, maybe it is because i don't fully understand it that i find it kind of boring, and this is coming from a die-hard buffy fan who has all the box sets of buffy and angel and who can watch any episode over and over again (except the one i have just been talking about. still a must see season to watch for any true buffy fan, but out of all 7 seasons, is definatly my least favourite. as i have said in another review for this season, the extra features are a must.
