In one of his most memorable roles, Steve McQueen stars as Detective Frank Bullitt, a hard-driving, tough-as-nails San Francisco cop. Bullitt has just received what sounds like a routine assignment: keep a star witness out of sight and out of danger for 48 hours, then deliver him to the courtroom on Monday morning. But before .. I received a copy of the bonus dvd prior to the main dvd.
This unfortunately did not read on my machine, so I returned it, after advising the situation via the method requested (e-mail).
I have, to date, not received the main dvd to view! so cannot give any rating other than 1 star.
Steve McQueen's finest hour in a story that is tightly written, well directed and brilliantly acted by one of the great actors of our time.
The car chase is legendary and a major influence on all of the stuff attempted by Frankenheimer and the like these days.
Much of the action seems dated now, but remember that this was shot over 35 years ago. Many directors could learn a thing or two from Bullitt about balancing of scripted themes and delicacy of touch when dealing with action.
An interesting final twist keeps it taught until the end...
Before watching this i had only seen steve Mcqueen in one other film-The Great Escape! Obviously it was a lot to live up to and i think he might just have done it!!. Mcqueen plays Cop Frank Bullit who is assigned to protect a key witness in an upcoming trial but things dont quite go to plan. This is a great film from the late 60's and McQueen puts in a great performance that has to make him one of the great actors of our time. My only problem with the film is that it maybe goes on a little too long but it has great moments including a brilliant car chase!
Well worth a look i think.
My oh my! This is max power's wet dream is witnessed right at this moment.
Phew, the car chase is the originator of all street car chases and despite being copied a million times, it is still exhilarating. Steve McQueen at his down-right coolest which has taken me over to the dark side of sleek, slick and cool film-making.
Anyone will enjoy this take my word and bank it!
The end of the movie is a bit of an anti-climax,especiallt if it is preceded by 'the' car-chase scence.
Maybe i'm biased because it is a bit dated ,but i've also seen older films that i've enjoyed more.
But the movie main flop is that the running time is too much.Bullit is just too long

This film possibly has one of the greatest car chases of all time that must rival the chase in The French Connection. I think in the whole film Steve McQueen will possibly only say a few sentences but his screen presence is fantastic.

I think this film is one of my most favourites of all time - I just love the camera angles, the lack of music during the car chases, the music when their isn't a car chase, the scenery, the story - it's all excellent!

Clips from this film were of course used for the Ford Puma television advert!

As well as starring possibly the coolest man in film history, Steve McQueen, 'Bullit' also features one of the most famous car chases in film history. Add in the fact that Bullit's first name is Frank, possibly the coolest name in film history - especially for cops - and you've got one good movie. Not to mention the core of the film itself. It's good stuff.
Has to be one of the best examples of the car chase - Steve McQueen being his ultra-cool self pegging it about San Francisco (hill jumps and all).
Pretty good story, script and action but it has to be the car chases that are most memorable in this film. Inspired numerous modern chases, and old queenie did all the driving himself!!
The best thing about Bullitt is the music and the famous car chase but that doesnt happen until the second half of what is a very dull film. The lavish praised on this film seems to focus primarily on Steve McQueen but the merit is underserved. McQueen is either trying to look really cool or is thoroughly bored by the whole experience. His unemotional character almost looks like he is sleep walking. The plot is pretty basic and doesnt stand out from any cop TV show of that time and why the Mafia was called The Organisation and not the Mafia is ridiculous. The story is set over 2 days and with Peter Yates direction that is paced so slow it felt like it was filmed in real time. With a tighter direction, less unnecessary shots and a more engaged McQueen this could have been a great film like its car chase which if it wasnt for that Bullitt would be completely unremarkable.
I thought this was one of the slowest films I have ever seen. nothing happened and it went no where. It seemed to drag on and on. Even the much feted car chase seemed slow. I guess I have been ruined by more modern action packed films. The biggest laugh however came in the special features with the featurette 'commitment to reality'.
