A dark, gritty and quite brutal story that poigniantly muddies the concepts of morality, just punishment and the value of the penal system itself. The protagonist is imprisoned for having killed a man who raped a member of his family but was allowed free, and is then himself subjected to the systematic destruction and dehumanisation that perhaps should have befell his victim. Lenny James reportedly campaigned very hard to star in this series having read the script, and is most impressive, only for the show to have been 'buried' by Channel 4 in their cowardly relegation of it to the graveyard shift when showing it some years back. Akin to the drama OZ, it is triumphant, tragic and hard to forget, and questions the deserved plight of society's pariahs.
