Burn Notice - Season 1

When intelligence agencies need to dispense with one of their spies they serve a burn notice. A burn notice informs other agencies that the spy has become unreliable, effectively ending his or her career. BURN NOTICE follows Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), whose intelligence career comes to an abrupt halt after a botched job in Nigeria. Westen returns home to Miami, Florida, only to discover that he has been cut off from all his contacts in the agency and his bank account has been frozen. Without a penny to his name, Westen decides to work as an unlicensed private investigator, using the money he makes to launch his own investigation into his fate with the intelligence agency. Westen's new career presents him with plenty of opportunities to delve into Miami's seedy underbelly, with drug dealers, gunrunners, prostitution rings, and gangsters all coming under his watchful eye.

    Red Hot!!

If you've read the synopsis of the series you know the overall plot. So, all that needs to be said is that this is excellent. Jeffrey Donovan plays the burnt agent with humor and a large amount of tongue in cheek, Bruce Campbell is his dead pan ex colleague and friend, Gabrielle Anwar fortunately dropping the dire I rish accent after the pilot plays the trigger happy ex-girlfriend while Sharon Gless (remember Cagney and Lacey) is Jeffrey Donovan's Hypochondriac mother.

In all an excellent cast, storyline and definitely worth a watch.

    Good TV type entertainment.

I have to admit my very first impression of this series was not good - just another made for TV action/drama. After the first disc I only just stopped myself from removing the remaining discs from my selections - I am glad I didn’t as it sort of grew on me. It is presented along the lines that the ‘Magnum’ series took with quite a bit of voice over from the star keeping you informed of what is going on - each episode is a different story - apart from the pilot - I am still waiting for part two of that story.

The main character we are led to believe was some sort of spy who was employed by the government and for some reason has been blacklisted - hence the term Burn Notice. The whole story is based around ‘Michael’ trying to find the reason for the official Burn Notice who ordered it and the reasons behind it.

Meanwhile Michael is trying to make a living and at the same time always following leads to help him find the answer to his Burn Notice questions. He is a tough character and well versed in the art of self defence and electronic surveillance. Of course there is a friend and female companion to help plus another famous face acting as his mother. The storylines are all familiar but the acting and the introduction of modern surveillance techniques gives them new life.
