Buster Keaton, "Go West"

This group of three shortish films is a good compilation of Keaton's early work.
The first, 'Go West' concerns the efforts of an accident-prone train driver to make his way in life, culminating in his adventures in the 'Wild West', and his eventual triumph involving a large herd of cows, an entire army, and a train. It is fast-paced and very funny.
The second, 'Hard Luck', takes a potentially tragic theme-that of a would-be suicide who bungles every attempt, and the third, 'The Scarecrow', again involves a hapless young man who manages ultimately to triumph.
Keaton's acrobatic finesse is amazing throughout, and the tale of the poor young man winning over the hand of the rich man's daughter, his usual story line, is never boring and always funny. It is interesting to note that he did all his own stunts, so must have been extremely fit, and often very daring. Altogether I found the collection a delight, and was impressed by his ability to keep a stony impassive face throughout.- Was this review helpful to you?
