    [Highly rated reviewer]

This DVD features 2 classic Buster Keaton films plus a third which is incomplete but which has been reconstructed using still photos in places. Steamboat Bill Jnr features some memorable comic scenes and lots of hair-raising stunts, including the famous one where the side of a house falls on Keaton, and he is saved by standing just where the window falls. Convict 13 features lots of slapstick when Keaton is mistaken for a convict and hauled off to jail. Recommended if you like Keaton's stone-face style.

While the accompanying features are merely very good, 'Steamboat Bill Jnr' is amazing. The early scenes are very funny and the jailhouse sequence absolutely hilarious. Marion Byron as the love interest is still appealing today. But the real surprise to me was the climax - I honestly think the hurricane sequences are still the most spectacular special effects ever filmed, far more viscerally dramatic than anything involving CGI or blue-screen. It has to be said I found the musical accompaniment highly irritating and very quickly switched to watching with the sound turned down.

Featuring one of the most famous silent film scenes ever, this is an amazing piece of early cinema. It is slapstick and may seem unsophisticated now, but the physicality of Buster Keaton still impresses.

  • Classic let down by dvd quality

Buster Keaton was a genius and even now, in an age of CGI and summer blockbuster extravaganzas, his films still entertain. The films on this DVD are no exception, I've seen them before on tv soI know I liked them and they deserve more than 3 stars. However as with other Keaton discs rented here, the enjoyment of the films was marred by the poor quality of the discs. If anyone has watched Paul Merton's recent tv series on the silent era they will have seen him show the difference between viewing a rejuvenated copy of the film compared to the dark, scratchy versions so often churned out by video and dvd companies. Unfortunately the discs I have rented fall into the latter category so I have to knock a star off. I don't know whether there are any cleaned up discs of Keaton out there, I haven't seen any that claim to be anyway, but surely its long overdue to give him the upgrade that Laurel and Hardy film have experienced (although not the awful colourisation versions!)
