Most helpful review Buster Keaton - Vol. 7

    [Highly rated reviewer]

'The scarecrow' is solid short Buster. 'Go west' is a feature from what is generally considered his greatest period, although it's often looked down on by critics who don't respond to the film's mellow pacing. I think it's right up there with his best, though, beautifully directed (note the use of landscape, and figures within it throughout, especially the contrasts with the cities which bracket the main action) and consistently inventive (although, as Buster himself noted, the climax doesn't quite work because the cows wouldn't behave themselves!).

I rented this mainly for the marginally rarer 'Hard luck', and was richly rewarded. More scattershot than some of his shorts, and less organized, but it's a really funny film, with a succession of gags starting with a series of attempted suicides, all illustrating Buster's complete inability to get lucky. Some of his later shorts would take this to surprisingly dour extremes (look at, for instance, 'The boat'), but this is perfectly judged, easily overcoming the poor nature of the print.

He had our three children in stitches watching Buster Keaton Vol 7, as they didn't realise that a silent film could be so funny. It's well worth hiring, if not for Buster, but to see what life was like 85 years ago!!
