It's dated, but what do you expect from a film that's 80 years old? The stunts are awesome - no wires, no CGI, no stunt doubles, no health and safety regs either. If you're looking for thrills, spills etc look elsewhere but if you have a genuine interest in film 'The General' is a classic in the truest sense of the word.
I gave it only three stars because somewhere along the line someone decided to dub in sound effects which only serve to remind you it's a 'silent' film. I would rather have heard the original 'soundtrack'.
And the other feature, The Electrician, is fairly entertaining too.
I'm not sure what I was expecting from 'The General' and Buster Keaton. In the event I found it disappointing to the point of being bored by it. Much more entertaining is the much shorter 'The Electric House' with its many gags. With 'The General' a knowledge of and an emotional involvement in the American Civil War would have made it a more interesting experience.
