Most helpful review Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

  • The fact that it's a Western should not put off any anti-western viewer. This is one of the GREATS of any genre

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I see this film as one of the Top 100 in its own right; and I see it as one of the best Westerns ever made......it even has music and comedy to add to a strong and serious plot.

Newman and Redford are quite outstanding...neither 'outdo' the other : they have a chemistry that is so hard to find. It is a pity that 'The Sting' ( another top-notch movie) was their only other film together.

How on earth did 'Midnight Cowboy' beat this wonderful film in the best Oscars list ?? But I suppose I am used to seeing the Academy getting it all wrong so often !

This film is for everyone......a rip-roaring yarn, two heroes who remain in the memory, lots of aspects for viewers who are not big Western fans, a wonderful song ( in a film sequence on a bicycle that is nothing short of brilliant ), humour as well as action , adventure and joy and sadness.

And one of the great screen dialogue moments as Butch and Sundance are about to literally jump for their lives. Great.

  • Slighly dated but still very watchable.

Not the all time classic that I remember but nevertheless a good watchable film. It is a bit dated now and a bit naff in places. Cannot be taken seriously as a western as the two outlaws are just too polite and friendly, charming and unscary to be taken seriously. It is more of a light hearted drama / comedy really. Katherine Ross is excellent.

I enjoyed this film. Newman and Redford are great together and play loveable rogues very well. A top western and interesting true story.

  • The most overrated film in the history of cinema.

    Rated - 2.0 stars

I can't see what all the fuss is about. Two interchangable characters compete to find out who can be the most self-consciously charming for nearly two hours. Meanwhile, they crack heavily cued jokes from a remarkably dull script in an effort to show how loveable they are. They also manage to flee a town for days, only to find they are still in its vicinity when they finally lose their pursuers - a massive hole in the plot that seems to have gone unnoticed.

If you like films because other people tell you they are 'classics', watch this.

If you like watching actors managing to give apparently brilliant performances by simply posing and using jokes the Rat Pack would have rejected, watch this.

If you like films that merit their acclaim, don't bother.
