Butterfly's tongue
By traklaw from Strathclyde , 26 Oct 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
Set on the cusp of the Spanish civil war this wonderful, bitter sweet film tells the tale of a relationship between a wise old school teacher at the end of his career, and a young boy just starting school.
Against a background of growing fascist oppression Don Gregario attempts to teach his class and young Moncho about freedom, love, liberty and the wonders of the world but can he do so against the relentless advance of Francos dictatorship?
This film captures much of the emotion we experienced in films like Cinema Paradisio, without being over sentimental. It is a thought provoking without being didactic, entertaining without being shallow. I cannot recommend it too highly.- Was this review helpful to you?

A bittersweet gem of a movie.
By gingerspike (410 reviews) from Grimsby , 07 Jun 2012A wonderful, moving, sad film about a young boy and his relationship with his teacher in Spain as the country is about to be immersed in civil war. The film touches on the notion of cowardice and is in essence a political film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dont miss the point
By ArthouseAlec (18 reviews) , 18 Feb 2012I can see other reviewers are split about this and it is understandable - this is political film and makes no bones about it, but to say it is depressingly fatalistic is to miss the point. The others characters in a way do not really matter - this is a story about a child's half-understanding of the adult world, neither more nor less. And that confusion is beautifully stated in the boy's choice of insults to hurl at his departing teacher. So the politics is not about the choice between right and left - the storyline could equally have been transposed to the old Soviet Union - but between the enrichment of a life and its narrowing. One way or another generations pass but for educators and parents and everyone else concerned with the social fabric that choice always remains, and I take that as the message of this ultimately inspiring film.- Was this review helpful to you?
