Powers Boothe gives another powerful performance in this effective dramatisation of what might happen to bring about the Third World War. Like 1995's Crimson Tide, this successfully poses the nuclear threat question, and, even though you could only really have one of two outcomes (and how many world wars have you heard about lately?), director Jack Sholder (The Hidden, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge) manages to keep the tension building, helped by a solid cast which includes James Earl Jones, Martin Landau and Rip Torn.
A TV movie about the end of the world did not inspire confidence, but I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Taking the accidental triggering of a nuclear war as its cue, the film deftly deals with a number of sub-plots, including one bomber crew as well as the political attempts to end the nuclear exchange. Superior acting lends the film a weight that is often missing, although I must confess to thinking of Dr Strangelove more than once! Give the film a chance if you can, and I think you will be presently surprised.
Utter twaddle! Full of stereo-typed characters. Just not 'real'
