C'Etait un Rendez-Vous

Filmed in 1976, the revered short film by seminal French director Claude Lelouch is regarded as the ultimate chase scene - the connoisseur's trump card in response to "Bullitt" or "The French Connection". It is uncompromising to an astonishing degree and could only be the product of a man like Lelouch - a man's man, with a string of wives, fast cars and great films behind him.

Lack of availability has only fuelled myths surrounding the film. What we do know is that there are no special effects, no speeding up of the film of blocking off of the streets. Lelouch simply mounted the camera on the front of the car and takes us on an astonishing, quite literally death-defying drive through the streets of a beautifully filmed 70s Paris with a glorious soundtrack provided by the engine's wail, tyres squeal and exhaust notes' roar.

    Fascinating, but not that clever

The lower you get a camera the faster the speed seems. To get some reckoning, look at the tops of trees and houses to see actually how fast the car is going.

The engine is soundtracked off an F1 Ferrari - and squealing tyres on cobblestones? Don't think so.

Just like music can make a horror film scarier, then a load of special effects squeals and growls can make you think this is cleverer than it is.

Its cult status has come from the 'no camera trick' angle. So watch it with the sound muted and see what's left.

It's the movies - enjoy it, but don't believe everything you see.

    Irresponsible, but I love it.

This is either 5 stars or 1 star. I don't know whether to say you must see this or avoid it. I suppose it really depends if you are a nutter or not.

The guy from Cambridge who reviewed this is right, our roads are full of idiots who act irresponsibly and kill people. If this film will make you drive like this, then stay away but then again, anybody who is an idiot will probably make this essential viewing anyway.

I'm not at all in favour of any kind of censorship. Natural Born Killers may have inspired some lunatic to go on a killing spree but we just can't quantify that. Who's to say that they wouldn't have killed someone anyway.

Right, I've made my recommendation decision :

So, if you are are inclined to drive like a t**t, get yourself a life, grow up and avoid this film - you're not mature enough to appreciate it.

If however, you are a safe driver, and enjoy an injection of testosterone/adrenaline fuelled excitement, go for it.
