Treated in a quasi amusing fashion, we have here the sory of a man who discovers art in the form of film, only to painfully find out that when the pram enters the hall, creativity flies out of the window, to paraphrase the GK Chesterton quote. The tale is in fact a closely worked metaphor for the effects of the state on the artist, and it is to Kieslowski's merit that the latter finally seems to win out - or does he? Everything about the production is spot on, the dismal surroundings, the superb acting of the main characters, and the film reproduces what it must have been like (and still is in some states) to have the feeling that you are being ruthlessly squashed by the malign heel of the totalitarian state. Very good.
