I am a big fan of the Italian cannibal movies set in the 70's (The uncut versions imported I might add) ferox, holocaust and slave of the cannibal god. So I went into this film expecting the same sort of discusting violence and sickening gore that i had come to expect from these movies.
I'm afraid that this film does not hold up very well to these pre mentioned cannobal movies. The story is centred after the vietnam war where several GI's come back infected with the cannibal disease where they hunger for human flesh.
There are a few flash eating moments in this movie but they never seem to get to the intestine ripping moments like the other films in this genre. the effects are a little suspect in places as well as the retro music.
Its not all bad though Saxon is supurb as always and at least you get another slant on the cannibal theme outside of the jungle. Also its nice that not real animal slaughter is put into this film.
Best advice would be to hire either cannibal Apocolpyse or Cannibal Ferox (Uncut versions)
Cannibal Apocalypse, had always stirred my curiosity along with the rest of the italian cannibal mondo genre,i guess it would have been at that magical time in the eighties, when all manner of delights were available in your local video shop to browse at if you could reach, high enough. So back to the movie,it starts of ok with real life footage of the Vietnam conflict intercut with the actors to set the scene, and then descends into some really bad soap melodrama post vietnam, intercut with some poorly done horror sequences, the only thing worthwhile is the extras on the dvd,as the history of it is more interesting than the movie itself, and hearing john saxon discussing it is quite enlightening!
one for those interested in movie history.
