LOVEFiLM Review
-
By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM
Bennett Miller's biopic of great American novelist Truman Capote. The film centres on a period when Capote is researching a mass murder for his novel In Cold Blood. The events shape his character and the novel shapes American literature irreversibly.

The Whispering
By Vladimir Ripjakokof from London, UK , 30 Apr 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Philip Seymour Hoffman must do an incredible job of impersonating Truman Capote in this movie (I don't know this for sure because I, unlike the self congratulatory critics it seems, never knew Mr Capote). I have no idea why else this film would have met with the critical acclaim it did. I refuse to believe that I just didnt get it or that it was too smart for me--this film was anything but.
Hoffman whispers his way through the movie making the dialogue very difficult to hear, let alone care about.
The film plods and this is compounded on by underdeveloped characters for whom the viewer can build no kind of empathy.- Was this review helpful to you?

(368)Exceptionally good
By a customer from Cumbria , 16 Jul 2007I wasn't particularly interested in watching this film however I was absolutely riveted by it. Also, a good sign for a film, it left me thinking about it long after it had finished.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not 'Infamous'
By a customer from Yorkshire , 13 Jul 2007I actually saw 'Infamous' in the cinema first and after all the hype, was keen to see what made this other film Oscar material. The answer is... um, no idea. Compared to Toby Jones' inspired performance, Hoffman's Capote seems forced. He is also far too big a man to be a convincing lead. The constant cutting and chopping between scenes denies the film any cohesion or solid narrative to drive it forward. Overall, a total disappointment, saved only by its visuals.- Was this review helpful to you?

Cold Blood indeed
By a customer from Brighton , 11 Jul 2007Who's the monster? Facing an articulate and fairly attractive multiple murderer Capote indulges himself in worming out every nuance of the guilty man's personality.
I was particularly interested - and appalled - at Capote's treatment of his good friend and voluntary researcher Harper Lee (doing the interviews he could not face). When her To Kill a Mockingbird was out before he felt he could finish the murder story he behaved atrociously to her at her publishers' party. She just answered sweetly that she understood he would be disappointed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Twat!

Shame about the voice.
By Kate Blackwell from Cambridge, England , 29 Jun 2007Undoubtedly to become a classic film. Unfortunately, I struggled to understand Capote's voice for much of the film. I recall a similar experience when I first saw the Godfather and heard Marlon Brando's voice. I guess such a comparison alone is vindication enough. I suspect that a second viewing would clear the 'fog'.- Was this review helpful to you?
