Taking a popular conspiracy theory a stage further — did the Americans really land on the Moon, or did they fake it in a TV studio? — this ingenious thriller sees three men bound for Mars, until there's a technical hitch on the launch pad. The astronauts end up faking the mission to save face, but their space capsule (which went without them) burns up on re-entry. Problem one: three embarrassingly alive astronauts. Problem two: their distraught families. Problem three: Elliott Gould as a nosey reporter. Directed by Peter Hyams with real flair, this is hugely enjoyable, all the way to the gripping finale with Telly Savalas relishing his fun role as an old-time crop-dusting pilot who's got the right stuff.

The mission was a sham. The murders were real.

This story revolves around the first manned flight to Mars and its return trip to Earth. A N.A.S.A. Mars mission won't work, and future mission funding is endangered, so they decide to fake it; just this once. For our intrepid (and honest) astronauts who have to keep the secret, this is their undoing.

Long before O.J. Simpson was chased by the authorities for real, he finds himself being pursued by men with guns, helicopters with bigger guns and snakes (who don't need guns).

A top-notch conspiracy thriller which i'm sure once you've watched it will explain many of the current theory's that fuel the conspiritors fires. Would love to have given it more than 3 out of 5, but it looks dated. Remember it is a 70's film, but then so was Star Wars.

    Quality seventies fare

A classic seventies thriller, dripping in paranoia and quality characters.
