In a bid to revitalise the genre during the 1970s, Hammer gave writer/director Brian Clemens, the brains behind The Avengers, carte blanche to bring new blood to the vampire myth. The result is a bright and breezy blend of horror, comedy, swashbuckler and Italian western that follows the adventures of Captain Kronos (Horst Janson) as he tracks down aristocratic bloodsuckers, with a little help from a hunchback professor (John Carson) and an exotic gypsy dancer (Caroline Munro). A dead toad, buried in a box, will spring to life if a vampire walks over it — just one example of the undead rules introduced in a fun fear-frolic that became an instant Hammer cult.
Even by latter-day Hammer standards, writer-director Clemens transfuses movie vampire lore outrageously, and introduces... read more on Time Out
Young women from the village are being mysteriously drained of their blood, bewildered, the local physician requests the help of an old friend, the ?herb? smoking, swashbuckling ex-military man Captain Kronos (Horst Janson). Freelancing has a vampire hunter with the aid of his occult studying compatriot (John Cater) and a beautiful gypsy girl he saves from the stocks (Caroline Munro), Kronos sets about finding the source of the attacks.
In an attempt to revive flagging sales, Hammer swept away the dark, cobweb laden castles and injected the vampire genre with sword fights, bar brawls and self-parody. Whilst the result is far from disastrous, it could not prevent the inevitable demise of the ageing British cinema flagship. With a somewhat feather light plot the film nevertheless moves along at a brisk pace, throwing up some great lines along the way. Performances are solid and Janson certainly brings an element of fun to the character. Caroline Munro is fine has the obligatory Hammer ?babe? and those of you with keen memories will recognise her has the late wife of the devious Dr Phibes (The Abominable Dr Phibes, 1971).
This is certainly worth a rental for those looking to sample the Hammer genre and whilst some Hammer fans may frown at the attempted new direction, most will probably already have this one in their collection. 3 out 5.
An above average horror film that blends adventure with fright. Captain Kronos (Horst Janson) a sword-wielding hero and his hunchback sidekick are a professional team of vampire killers. Story line is interesting enough. Special effects are par for this type of movie. I knew it had me for the duration as soon as I heard the wind blowing... creepy and foreboding. Plus some winsome lasses to keep you entertained. Another very good Hammer Production. The players including John Cater, Caroline Munro, John Carson and Lois Daine all pull out fine performances.
One other added plus, the print of this film, considering it?s age, is excellent.
