Spoilt rich kid falls off an ocean liner and gets picked out of the sea by a rough and ready fisherman. Cue some life lessons to be learned onboard the 'We're Here', a fishing trawler plying the eastern American coast. An MGM quality production of its day, this probably has a bit too much obvious studio sets to be convincing, and Tracy's wig and accent are dubious indeed (but still enough to net him an Oscar). But there's no denying the power of the story that builds up between the boy and the fisherman and the emotional dynamics that follow.
A good family film although this movie is obviously quite dated in these days of special effects adventure genre, and the boy speaks in that oh so correct English accent of the time, which can irritate, but for all that you can enjoy the acting of the great Spencer Tracy and know your kids will enjoy a movie from a more innocent era
Spencer Tracey is always watchable and one of the all time greats. I picked this film after Channel 4 did its programme on best 'learning process' films (can't remember how they titled it now). Freddy Bartholomew is an amazing child actor and it was touching to see how he changed from spoiled rich kid toa boy with values under the guidance of the cheerful fisherman (Tracey). It's sad but heartwarming and ok to watch if you don't want anything too demanding

classic b&w movie and good story line
In these days of colour and computer effects this may seem old fashioned, but this original Ruyard Kipling story is one of true magic. I have watched this movie as a boy, in my twenties and much older - but the male bonding message of man and boy and father is perfect. Not one to be easily moved by movies, this one never fails to hit the spot. Along with Kind Hearts and Coronets and Casablanca and other B&W classics, this is essential viewing for movie lovers. Make sure you have a good supply of tear wiping material to hand for the final scenes. This movie has reduced a cynical flat mate and and girlfriend many years ago into a blubbering mess when it was shown on TV, despite my warnings of it's possible effect. A classic in the 30/40's weepy tradition. A Must See!
Perfect film to enjoy in front of the fire on a cold winter evening.
