Thought - provoking and compelling
By Justin Berry from Watford, England , 08 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
The subject matter, being as it is about a family torn apart by paedophilia, should make this film hard to watch. However, watching the case unfold against the Friedmans makes this a very compelling and thought-provoking documentary. In particular, the relationships between the family members have to be seen to be believed.
If you enjoyed the documentary style of Bowling for Columbine, then you'll definitely appreciate this, possibly even more so if you prefer your documentaries without a narrator.
'Capturing the Friedmans' will have you talking about it long after you've ejected the disc from your player.- Was this review helpful to you?

(159)Practically unbelievable
By StreetMole (4 reviews) , 08 May 2013I remember seeing this at the cinema on its original release and being completely blown away. It was the first documentary I saw that had me gripped as much, if not more, than most feature films. Everything about it - the story, the impeccably judged tone, the unique element of the home movies etc - left me haunted for a long time afterwards. Very thought-provoking and well-made film indeed. Must be seen!- Was this review helpful to you?

Entrapping the Friedmans?
By Loopgrinder (115 reviews) , 15 Mar 2013A good documentary which makes you question the subject matter - thought provoking. Not as disgusted by these 'monsters with human faces' as I thought I would be. Partly because I found it hard to believe the evidence against them. What do you think? Watch it and decide.- Was this review helpful to you?

What happens when the worst kind of chicken comes home to roost
By a customer , 21 Feb 2013Just watched it and witnessed the accusations of community hysteria, police manipulation of victims, questionable evidence and the clearly blatant lying by the main perpetrator and the final, and at times confusing, did he or didn't he or was he just another victim, question mark over the son. This film is both perversely entertaining and shocking in its portrayal of a seemingly respectable, middle class, yet quirky family disintegrating as the dark, disturbing truth gradually comes to light. It has left me with one question; How the hell do you identify a paedophile?- Was this review helpful to you?

Shocking and yet touching at the same time
By boho (1 review) , 22 Jan 2013This documentary is the most thought-provoking programme I have ever watched, it certainly makes you question the 'community hysteria' that surrounds high profile cases such as this. I would recommend this documentary to anyone, as it is very real and 'close to the bone' reminder of the impact that crime has on the people around you.- Was this review helpful to you?
