The start of the film is the end of the film.
Carlito, (Pacino) has been let out of prison after a five year stretch and wants to go straight, but trouble keeps following him.
'I dont invite this sh&t, it comes after me, - got go somewhere to hide.'
His plan is to make $75,000 from a nightclub and then go away with the love his life Gail, (who is expecting).
He is always trying to see an angle :
'When you can't see the angels no more you're in trouble.'
In fact his orginal plan post prison is to end up renting cars since rental guys don't get killed that much!
There's a touching scene where Carlito climbs onto the top of a rooftop and watches Gail dancing through the next building's window in the rain.
'You pray for one face which didn't change, one face which still knows you and looks at you in the same way.'
Carlito knows the world of the streets and says to a young kid doing a drop :
'You said they were friends, but there aint no friends in this s%$t business.'
That is a theme of the film everyone is continually selling each other out bar Carlito.
There's a memorable quote from the shoot out following the drop :
'You think you're big time you gonna f&^%ing die big time!'
Things are going well for Carlito in the club, he has to, 'Lie low and keep off peoples' minds' Carlito is a cool headed business man like Robert Di Nero in Casino. - Both of them never seem to enjoy themselves!
The pace of the film really picks up once Dave Kleinfelt demands a favour from Carlito.
'Dave is my friend I owe him - right or wrong.'
(Carlito owes him one for getting him out of jail early) and Dave kills off a big crook and his son out in the ocean.
'There's a line you cross that you never come back from. Dave crossed it and Im there with him.'
Dave goes from being a lawyer to be a gangster and no amount of time at school can prepare him for that.
'You don't get reformed, you just run out of wind.'
