Kleiber's recent death, at the age of 74, has cost classical music one of its most charismatic yet elusive figures (Kleiber never gave interviews), and his relatively few excursions into the recording studio have left the musical world with a frustratingly small number of recordings, albeit all of them of the highest quality. Thus we are particularly fortunate that several concerts, including the five present in this box set, were filmed during his career. The hallmarks of Kleiber's conducting - his minimal but graceful gestures, the authority he conveys from a thorough understanding and faultless memory of the score, plus his hypnotic command of his musicians - are all clearly in evidence here.

The '89 and '92 concerts are rather similar. The VPO, unmatched in this repertoire, the bourgeosie of Vienna out for a knees-up, all ringmastered by this difficult, reclusive, enigmatic German, all smiles but how genuine? In his narrow core interest (the Austro-German classics) he has no peers; doubters should simply hear his DG Beethoven 5, a quarter-century later it flattens any criticism; also No 7 and the Brahms 4. Here also, in the all-male VPO (in '89 even the harpist is male), he seemingly just lets them play - play music that, after all, is in their bones anyway. It is not so much conducting as guiding, but of course this apparent throw-away approach hides the hours of rehearsal that came before, and the reputedly mesmeric effect that Kleiber had on all bands that he faced. He always did it his way - and when the greatest of orchestras in Berlin came knocking, after the death of Karajan, this magician had no problem in politely but firmly saying 'no thanks'. Will we see his like again?
THAT A CONDUCTOR CAN BECOME A LEGEND EVEN THOUGH HE ONLY HAS A COUPLE OF RECORDINGS TO HIS CREDIT,THEN SOMETHING ABOUT THIS MAN MUST BE SPECIAL.
THIS MAN OOZES HUMANITY,MUSICALITY AND HAS A CONDUCTING TECHNIQUE THAT IS UNPARALLELED IN MY OPINION.
PHILIPS'S COLLECTION IS WELCOMED AND THE HIGHLIGHT FOR ME IS HIS INTERPRETATION OF BRAHMS 4TH SYMPHONY ON DISC 3.THE NEW YEAR VIENNA CONCERTS ARE OK IF YOU LIKE STRAUSS,BUT EVEN IN THAT GENRE THIS MAN IS WORTH WATCHING AND LISTENING TO.
IN A WORLD WHERE SUPERLATIVES ARE GROSSLY OVERUSED,HERE THEN IS A TRUE LEGEND AND GENIUS.
AS FAR AS THE DISCS GO,PICTURE QUALITY AND SOUND ARE FINE.ON ONE OF THE DISCS HOWEVER,YOU ONLY HAVE THE OPTION OF LPCM STEREO OR DTS 5.1.THIS IS CURRENTLY A BUGBEAR OF MINE.WHY DO COMPANIES ASSUME THAT WE ALL HAVE DTS DECODERS AND LEAVE OUT LISTENERS LIKE ME WHO HAVE 5.1 DOLBY.EVEN 2.0 DOLBY WOULD BE BETTER THAN LPCM!
