Captivating!By Penny from Dunstable, England , 23 Feb 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]This production is lush and brings the story alive. Filmed on location in hot and dusty Spain the passion leaps out of the screen - even if you don't like opera or understand French, you'll love this. I was going to see Carmen live at the theatre, but I'll save my ?30 and watch this again instead. The sub-titles and repetition of phrases is also perfect for budding students of French!

superb setting, but the sound was unconvincingBy miltonman (1 review) , 14 May 2013superb scenery and performances throughout. my main criticism is that the sound seemed to be disconnected from the action. I realise that it was recorded prior to filming, but it jarred when the sound of the singer remained constant when whichever way they were facing on the screen. the bullfight at the beginning is very distressing, as is the shorter version near the end
Sizzling Spain meets French OperaBy a customer , 13 May 2013A classic that everyone should hear if not see. Most of Bizet's mesmeric score stays with you forever. The scenery is beautiful. I have to admit it's a long film and I did fast forward over some of the protracted singing - having got the gist in the first few lines! However, the music, the costumes and the landscape are spectacular and if you only ever see one opera - this has to be the one.
A Magnificent Definitive CarmenBy DavidinBrum (4 reviews) , 30 Oct 2012This is a great performance of Carmen which gains from director Francesco Rosi's commitment to shoot the film on location in Andalusia,Spain - not a single studio shot. The Spanish light is caught in the magnificent cinematography, and the overlay of the orchestra and singing upon the everyday noises of people talking and moving about makes it natural and thereby more powerful. Dialogue is spoken rather than sung (French with English with subtitles) and makes the narrative comes to life. Julia Migenes-Johnson acts from the heart - no posturing - rather, enormous, capricious passion. Placido Domingo convinces as the soldier out of his depth. A tragedy which questions our more prosaic lives. This film is magnificent, wonderfully mastered in Blu-ray. An unmissable classic.
Superb detailed scenery and wonderful music.By Viewmasterrobin (22 reviews) from Morpeth Northumberland , 30 May 2012Superb singing, costumes and most definetly scenery. However, the gory bullfight spoilt it a little for me. I was forewarned by another review so skipped most of the bullfight. The location scenery was stunning in blu-ray. It's a long time since I saw Carmen on stage, this performance was most enjoyable.
Disappointed fanBy a customer , 13 Apr 2012One of my favourite operas and cast, I have the original VHS version.
My only criticism is the soundtrack which I found lacked clarity, compared with the VHS version. This was a big disappointment and spoiled my enjoyment of the film.
