COMPLEX MADE VISUAL
By foglio from Dorset , 28 Sep 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
First of all, it is very difficult even to see carmina burana being performed at all! It is an extremely labourious masterpiece to be arranged, due to the enormous mobilisation of people to begin with. It is a masterpiece that either it is performed as it was intended, or just wait until someone does it; and I must admit, Seiji Ozawa did an incredible task putting it all together. Once we have passed this fact, we can see the immaculate performance of this elaborate work of art.- Was this review helpful to you?

Orff and Beethoven's 9th Symphony
By a customer from Ireland, west of the Shannon , 14 Jun 2005If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you will like. Carmina Burana is wonderfully original music by the relatively unknown classical composer, Carl Orff, to settings from mediaeval manuscripts concerned with the lives, loves and other activities of the religious folk of the day. As the language is also mediaeval, it would be impossible for your maiden aunt to be shocked, or even corrupted. The concert performance is in the Berlin Philharmonie, with a Japanese choir and conductor. First rate. More familiar to most followers of classical music is the accompanying performance, of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, with full orchestra, 4 vocal soloists and Japanese choir and conductor. I don't quite understand the dating of the DVD, as I think the date of the Carmina Burana performance in the video is dated as 1989. Regardless of chronology, both performances are fresh and vibrant.- Was this review helpful to you?
