Into each generation is born a creature of light and a creature of darkness. 1934. The American Dustbowl. The last great age of magic. In a time of titanic sandstorms, vile plagues, drought and pestilence - signs of God's fury and harbingers of the Apocalypse - the final conflict between good and evil is about to begin... The battle will take place in the Heartland of an empire called America. And when it is over, man will forever trade away wonder for reason. A sweeping epic that is both challenging and highly accessible, the HBO drama series 'Carnivale' focuses on the primordial conflict of good vs. evil, as played out against a pair of vivid and unusual backdrops: a traveling carnival working the American Dustbowl circuit, and an evangelical ministry in California. Episode titles: 'Milfay', 'After the Ball Is Over', 'Tipton', 'Black Blizzard', 'Babylon', 'Pick a Number', 'The River', 'Lonnigan Texas', 'Insomnia', 'Hot and Bothered', 'The Day of the Dead', 'The Day That Was the Day'.

Gloriously shot in the faded, atmospheric tones of a classic western with fine performances from Nick Stahl and Clancy Brown.
Addictive and surreal must-see TV.
Had high hopes for this series and I think they were pretty much met.
Each episode provides enough information to keep you going back for more.
It's pretty far-fetched stuff but the incredibly authentic feel and generally excellent acting makes it all the more easy to swallow.
The cast all look really authetic (most of them weren't picked for pretty faces) and just add to the feeling of being there.
It's a HBO series and so it often has scenes of an adult nature but not gratuitously and it's good to see a tv series that doesn't pull punches.
I can't wait to see it all again.
With all the hype about this being the next 'Twin Peaks', I knew this was either going to be very special or unwatchable arty trash.
Although slow and lacking the dark Lynch humour this series is exellent. Weird enough to keep Lynch fans happy, yet original enough not to offend.
The story is kinda like Stephen King's 'The Stand' set in a Carnivale, the characters are instantly watchable and offer plenty more to interest than just the ant/protaganist's story.
The series is best described as The Stand meets Twin Peaks all set in Marilyn Manson's Brain.
