Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones are reunited in this second classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical. In this bittersweet love story Billy Bigelow (MacRae), a smooth-talking carny barker, falls in love with a millworker (Jones) in a little town on the coast of Maine. Although Billy is killed during a robbery before the birth of his daughter, years later he is allowed to return to earth for one day to redeem himself - and to teach his daughter one important lesson. This, the most poetic and lyrical of all the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, features the classics "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, reunited after Oklahoma!, have the roles of their lives as Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, with their performance of If I Loved You a highlight, though they're done no favours by Henry King's static direction. However, the spirited June Is Bustin' Out All Over more than compensates.

I have not seen this for years, but it exceeded my memories.
You probably have to be a fan of the older style musicals, but if you are this is close to the top of the list. Songs I had forgotten were in the film which complimented the old favourites.
For you musical fans, its not to be missed.
Brilliant film, which I also recently saw at King's Theatre, Glasgow. If the powerful rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' isn't enough to make you watch this film, I dunno what is..oh yeah...it's a class film! (yeah, that'll do..)
Hugh Jackman is trying to persuade his Oscars dancing partner Anne Hathaway to join him on the Carousel. The Aussie star has developed a script for the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical and he wants Hathaway to play Julie Jordan opposite his Billy Bigelow. He says, "I've been looking to do a musical film for some time and after things like Moulin Rouge!, Chicago and Hairspray, I think there's a real opportunity there." And he's clear only Hathaway will do as his leading lady: "I've been filling Read more
