Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones are reunited in this second classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical. In this bittersweet love story Billy Bigelow (MacRae), a smooth-talking carny barker, falls in love with a millworker (Jones) in a little town on the coast of Maine. Although Billy is killed during a robbery before the birth of his daughter, years later he is allowed to return to earth for one day to redeem himself - and to teach his daughter one important lesson. This, the most poetic and lyrical of all the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, features the classics "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Great songs but rather too much dancing
I love the songs in Carousel, and was amused by the return of Barry Bigelow from Heaven, as this is totally different to the stage version that I have seen. I ... read more »
Hugh Jackman is trying to persuade his Oscars dancing partner Anne Hathaway to join him on the Carousel. The Aussie star has developed a script for the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical and he wants Hathaway to play Julie Jordan opposite his Billy Bigelow. He says, "I've been looking to do a musical film for some time and after things like Moulin Rouge!, Chicago and Hairspray, I think there's a real opportunity there."
