Immaculately cast and filmed in part on glorious Maine locations, this is a marvellous screen version of what is arguably Rodgers and Hammerstein's finest Broadway show. Some may find this tale of a reprobate's return to Earth to look out for his daughter arch in the extreme, but it is a tribute to the superb score and sensitive handling of the material that the film is moving. Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, reunited after Oklahoma!, have the roles of their lives as Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, with their performance of If I Loved You a highlight, though they're done no favours by Henry King's static direction. However, the spirited June Is Bustin' Out All Over more than compensates.

    Loved it

I have not seen this for years, but it exceeded my memories.

You probably have to be a fan of the older style musicals, but if you are this is close to the top of the list. Songs I had forgotten were in the film which complimented the old favourites.

For you musical fans, it’s not to be missed.

Brilliant film, which I also recently saw at King's Theatre, Glasgow. If the powerful rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' isn't enough to make you watch this film, I dunno what is..oh yeah...it's a class film! (yeah, that'll do..)

    Carousel

Another of the wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals which entertained the public in the post war years from 'Oklahoma' in the forties to the final musical in the series 'The Sound Of Music' in the sixties. The song are lyrical and well sung, the sets beautiful and the result highly satisfying. Recommended.

A musical for those who love musicals

This screen adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein stage musical may not have been a huge box office success in its day, but is still an absolute gem to watch and (after a few viewings) sing along to. The action begins with a posthumous Billy Bilagolow (Gordon MacRae) being told that, if he so chooses, he may return to the world of the living for just one day to visit his loved ones and set his mind at rest. As Billy recalls his former life as a Carousel barker, we learn of his love for mill worker Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones) and how Billy came to his tragic end. Deciding that he had unfinished business, he returns to earth to see how his widowed wife and fatherless child are doing without him.

The score for Carousel was a national best seller in America, and it’s not hard to see why. ‘June is bustin’ out all over’ is one of the greatest song and dance numbers ever to be put to screen and if ‘If I loved you’ doesn’t rouse you, you don’t have a heart. And then there’s ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

With gorgeous cinematography and a superb supporting cast (Robert Rounseville as Enoch Snow is a personal favourite) Carousel is a must see for any musical fan, you will not be disappointed.
