  • Tense thriller

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Tense horror about a bullied school-girl with telekenetic powers.

Sissy Spacek plays the girl, a quiet outsider whose religious mother has alienated her from her classmates, yet who is convinced against her instincts to atend the High School prom - with dire consequences for all concerned.

Sissy Spacek plays her part well, and the portrayal of the heroes and villains in the high school environment is convincing. Meanwhile director Brian De Palma builds the tension to a crescendo: the sense of impending disaster almost unbearable by the time it happens. Subtle yet powerful. Recommended.

People mock Carrie for being a weirdo. Carrie tries to be nice but they push Carrie over the edge. Carrie gives them their just desserts. Piper Laurie is a nutso religous freak. Plus it is the first to have the horror film twist, where is it the end or isn't it. Classic De Palma. Ignore the fact that all the school girls are knocking on thirty.

Outcast at school, has her first period in the gym showers, gets ridiculed, girls get detention, one girl wants revenge, another girl feels bad and asks hunk boyfriend to take outcast to prom, outcast girl’s religious mother forbids her to go.

Brian De Palma’s classic adaptation of the Stephen King novel which starts out like a soft porn film before moving into a teen prom flick with occasional oddness.

It’s in the last half hour though that it really hits its stride with the infamous prom scene & the mayhem that ensues afterwards.

Sissy Spacek is outstanding playing the want-to-be-normal Carrie & takes her performance up another gear towards the end.

Go support also from Betty Buckley, Amy Irving, Piper Laurie & the very young & pretty pair of John Travolta & Nancy Allen.

The music is mostly pretty awful using Psycho’s violin bursts for the weirdness but is very good during Carrie’s return home towards the end.

This is one of my favourite classic horror films. But is more supernatural than horror. A must see film. Makes you realise that your school days were not that bad .
