Emma Thompson stars as young, boyish and vivacious painter Dora Carrington, with Jonathan Pryce as writer and conscientious objector Lytton Strachey, the unobtainably gay man, that she loves passionately. Directed by Christopher Hampton (DANGEROUS LIAISONS) this unorthodox love-story is based on the real events in Dora's life surrounding the bohemian Bloomsbury art group where her attraction for the bearded bon vivant Strachey began. Having found her intellectual soul mate, she finds herself indulging in sexual escapades with many young attractive men to drown her undying love for the distinguished author, whose physical love she will never win. Starring San West, Rufus Sewell and Steven Waddington as the men she hopes will save her from the spell Strachey unwittingly has over her. Michael Nyman's sumptuous and yearning score is utterly beautiful and fittingly heartbreaking. The film won the 1996 Special Jury Prize at Cannes.

The extraordinary romance between androgynous painter Dora Carrington and eccentric homosexual writer Lytton Strachey in post-Victorian England is captivatingly portrayed by Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce in the directing debut of Christopher Hampton, writer of Dangerous Liaisons. Few love stories have been so intense or unusual as this account of the non-sexual relationship between the Bloomsbury group twosome, who shared their nonconformist alliance with Carrington's husband and Strachey's occasional boyfriends. Hampton's fascinating account is beautifully crafted, wittily scripted and intelligently realised, and Pryce (who won best actor at Cannes) gives the performance of a lifetime. Costume drama is rarely this compelling or moving.
Hampton's solidly performed directorial debut is a tasteful account of the intense, bizarre relationship between the... read more on Time Out
While the story is a little heavy-going or awkward at times the film is never less than beautiful to watch; there are some tremendous views of a rural England most people rarely see any longer and Emma Thompson looks great in an understated way. The music, by Michael Nyman, is excellent.
Why is this rated 18 in the UK and Eire, when in Germany it's only a 12?

A brilliant film, filled with good British humour. I actually forgot that Emma Thompson was in it! A wonderful, touching story of love, naivete, and homosexuality. It's the type of film we Brits are best at making (being the latent homosexuals we all are). Brilliant dance scene had me rolling around the floor in laughter.

If you like Merchant Ivory films (Howard's Way, Maurice, etc) then you will love this.
