Carry On Sergeant review

... and very different to the later Carry On films. A good example of the more gentle British humour of the late 50s with a plot concerning a group of freshly callled up national servicemen who bumble their way through initial training only to come good at the very end to ensure the eponymous sergeant takes the honours on his final day in the army. A little far-fetched at the end but it is a comedy after all. Plenty of good performances in a film which has the odd laugh out loud moment but contains more to smile about. On its own, not a great film I suppose but in context - with a feeling of nostalgia - a sort of landmark in British cinema to be enjoyed. Nice to see some great British actors most of whom are no longer with us.
