Casino Royale
This swinging spoof of Ian Fleming's spy hero concerns an aging James Bond (David Niven), reluctantly dragged out of retirement to face down the evil crime clique called SMERSH. In order to confound the enemy, the Secret Service sends five other agents, also under the name "Bond," and all six converge on the titular casino. Woody Allen, as the retiring superspy's nephew, causes havoc, while a flood of famous faces (and directors) revel in the silliness. And there's a great Burt Bacharach score to boot.

It is perhaps wise not to think of this unwieldy spy caper as a James Bond movie at all. Though nominally based on Ian Fleming's first 007 novel (originally a 1954 TV show starring Barry Nelson), it is in actual fact a proto-Austin Powers spoof, in which David Niven's retired Bond rounds up assorted 007 agents (among them Ursula Andress and Peter Sellers) to avenge the death of “M” (John Huston). A surfeit of screenwriters (eight, including Billy Wilder) and directors (five, including Huston) lends the whole a chaotic, disjointed air, but there is much fun to be had along the way. In the all-star cast, Orson Welles plays villain Le Chiffre and Woody Allen appears as James's neurotic nephew, Jimmy.

Woeful all-star kaleidoscope, a way-out spoof which generates far fewer laughs than the original. One of the most shameless wastes of time and talent in screen history.

proto-Powers for a cold war generation
Mike Myers may have produced a more polished Bond spoof, and one that actually makes some narrative sense, but he didn't have Peter Sellers, did he? Or Orson Welles, Bernard Cribbins and Ursula Andress come to think of it.
With a plot that seems to have emerged from a long and drunken game of 'consequences', "Casino Royale" isn't the easiest movie to follow. But multiple dream sequences involving lady bagpipers are no bad thing, and the ending is everything that "Dr Strangelove" wasn't. Bonkers. But good bonkers. -

Travesty
With this line up of actors and directors - and the gift of 007's existing self-parody - this should have been brilliant. Instead it’s an appallingly slow, dull and embarrassing film. Why did anyone bother producing a DVD version? Why did they release it at all?

Tarantino eyes Bond franchise

Hollywood director, Quentin Tarantino, has expressed interest in directing a Bond film. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, he told reporters that he was a big fan of the Bond movies and would love to make one of his own. "I would like to do the original book 'Casino Royale' and do it more or less the way the Ian Fleming book is. I've always wanted to do it," he said.
